Christmas
Well, it's come and gone. It was great. I really enjoy watching people open things I find for them. Dad, stepmom, sister, best friend and fiance came over to spend the day/evening with us -- there was lots of eating, drinking and being merry. We burned through a fair amount of beer, wine and champagne. The prime rib came out GREAT -- I can't wait to do one of those again! Roseville Meat Co. rocks! It was like buttah. The red-skinned mashed potatoes came out just right, and we roasted the asparagus with a little olive oil, salt & pepper -- yum. Garlic bread -- check. It was all good. The only thing I'd have done differently was made some gravy. I figured we didn't really need it, but I think it would have been nice to have.
After dinner, some of us hung out at the dinner table and played a modified version of "Outburst," just picking cards and letting people yell out their guesses about whatever the category was. No keeping score for us -- I don't think we'd have been able to do that anyway! The husband also put on Robin Williams Live at the Met and we all ended up sitting and watching that. Still one of the funniest stand-ups, I think.
So this morning I got up and cleaned up the kitchen and the rest of the house is basically put back together. The husband and I tried to go to the mall this afternoon, but it was a frigging zoo. We didn't get past the parking lot. We went across the street to Best Buy, and it was impossible. So we went to get a bite to eat, and the hamburger joint we were going to try out was also jammed. Passed on that. We ended up hitting Taco Bell, which was a damned 45-minute odyssey! Jeeeeeeeeezus. Anyway, we went to the Best Buy closer to our house and though it was busy, it wasn't like the one in Roseville, so the husband went off to find some video games and I went looking for CDs (because I haven't bought enough lately). He came out with 3 video games and a CD, and I came out with 3 CDs and Oprah's 20th Anniversary Collection. Yes, I must admit: I do watch Oprah. And though sometimes (often) it seems more like a celebrity love-in than a talk show, I do like it. The CDs I got were Coldplay's "Parachutes" (since I've been buying their stuff in reverse order), the latest Lifehouse CD and Beck's "Guero." Also for Christmas I got Nirvana's "Sliver: The Best of the Box," Aerosmith's "Rockin' the Joint," Joe Perry's latest, the platinum edition of Mariah Carey's "Emancipation of Mimi" CD with her most recent single on it, and a Charlie Brown Christmas CD (an admitted re-gift from my dad). Oh, and the husband also gave me a Flipsyde CD, but I'd bought it for him as well (what are the odds?) so I'm going to exchange the one he gave me for another. I'm thinking Kanye West's "Late Registration." Yes, my CD selections are definitely all over the map.
My mom and her significant other came over for Christmas Eve dinner and we exchanged gifts. It was a nice quiet evening and the pork loin chops came out rather well -- and the accompanying baked red potatoes (yes, we love the red potatoes!) covered in butter and cheese (mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm) went down easily.
We have a little Christmas money from the parents to spend, and the husband suggested I go get this mirror I've been eyeing at the Z Gallerie -- I have no idea where the hell I'll put it, but I am tempted. We'll see. Anyway, Christmas was a great day and my 5 day respite is about over. Back to work tomorrow. But, New Year's is coming, and we'll be spending it with the best friend and her fiance so that should be fun. Another 3-day weekend is just around the corner! I love that about the holidays.
Since I spent most of my time cooking (and drinking), I didn't get a lot of Christmas pictures, but I got some. A couple of cute ones:
We had lots of fun, just like last Christmas. My favorite thing I gave as a gift was a scrapbook/photo album of our vacation to Newport Beach with the family that I gave to my dad & stepmom. I didn't go all scrapbook crazy -- I don't have the patience for the kind of scrapbooks people make as a hobby -- but I found a cute black linen covered one that had a spot for a photo in the cover and had white pages in sheet protectors. I mounted two 4x6's per page, one on the top left, the other on the bottom right, and next to each photo in black I wrote short blips about each pic. Every so often I had a 5x7 photo mounted in the center of a page with a colored fibery (technical term, don't you know) paper behind it that set the picture off really well. Not a great explanation I guess, but that's all I got for now. I spent over 5 hours gluing pictures down Christmas Eve, and another hour or so Christmas morning finishing it. I was really happy with the way it turned out, very simple, and it made me think I would like to do some of those for us! I have yet to put our Cancun pics together. Good rainy day project.
Now, I've got to get cracking on some thank-you notes!

Your Christmas sounded spectacular. Of course, I'm still drooling over the food.
