Happy Thanksgiving

I'm sick! I came down with a cold 2 nights ago -- hit me from out of nowhere. It's worse today. Figures. I'm at my dad's house, with the husband and the stepdaughter. She hasn't been with us on Thanksgiving since I met the husband, so it's nice to have her here. If I wasn't sick, it'd be a great day. Instead, I have that constant "I'm about to sneeze" feeling and my nose is running like crazy. Damned cold medicine isn't doing its job!

The husband's father left today, after staying with us for 2 weeks. He's a nice guy, but 2 weeks is a long time to pick up after another person in addition to the ones you're already picking up after, and to have your "game face" on all the time, and host all the people who descended upon the house to visit with him while he was here. I'll be glad to get the house back in order and hopefully be done with this cold long before my birthday and Christmas roll around. I've been pretty good about keeping up on everything (laundry, dishes, general cleaning), but I'm tired of running the dishwasher twice a day and replacing the toilet paper roll DAILY. I think someone was eating it, or feeding it to the cat. We've never gone through so much toilet paper -- ever!

On Monday the husband was in an accident. He's okay, but his truck took a bit of a beating. He called at 5:44 in the morning to tell me he'd been rear-ended on the freeway. 15 minutes later, I was at the accident scene because I wasn't sure if his truck was driveable. They had everyone pull off the road and go to a coffee shop at the exit where the accident happened, and we waited for the CHP officer to come write his report. The driver who rear-ended the husband had to have his truck towed on a flat-bed. In short, there was a driver in a car two cars ahead of the husband whose tire started to shred as she was driving. The driver behind her, and my husband, found their autos being pelted by flying rubber as they were driving in the fast lane. Everyone had to slow down drastically and they all were working their way over to get off the road (the husband and the driver in front of him were going to try to help the driver whose tire was shredding and, by this point, whose wheel was sparking along the freeway), and he had his hazard lights on, but apparently a couple of vehicles behind him went around everyone and the third guy plowed into the husband's truck. The husband was down to about 10-15 mph, and the guy who hit him said he was down to about 40 . . . maybe 50. He got him good. Over $4,000 worth of damage from that one hit to the husband's truck. I think the truck of the guy who hit him is probably a total. Anyway, we waited at the coffee shop for the CHP and as the flat-bed pulled up with the other guy's truck, we noticed there was another car attached to it -- a new Infiniti G35 whose front end was smashed in. Yep, another accident on top of the husband's accident. Two other jacked-up cars also pulled into the parking lot. So 2 hours later, we were finally leaving the coffee shop and we spent the day dealing with the insurance company, body shop, rental agency, and doctor's office. The husband said he felt like he got punched in the back. His back was still sore a few days later, though he thinks it may be getting better. Still, he missed several days of work and we don't know whether he'll be reimbursed for that. Great timing, guy in the '93 Nissan! We SO do not need this drama right now. Anyway, I'm trying not to stress on it too much and keep telling myself that the situation will be resolved one way or another.

Before that, on Saturday my best friend had her engagement party. I thought it turned out well, but I was exhausted as I was the one who sent out the invites and took the RSVPs (for the people who bothered to RSVP, which were not many), helped decorate, and got there early to direct traffic. It's amazing how many people ignore the concept of RSVP. There were way more people there than RSVP'd, and the place where we had it was rather small. People suck. Overall, it went well -- but most of the people there were there for my best friend's fiance, so we didn't really know anyone.

Last Wednesday (a week ago) was the sister in law's last day visiting after being in town for a week, and I very stupidly stayed up with them to talk until 2 a.m. I could not get up the next morning! I felt like a car had run me over. I had also had a few drinks, but the staying up is what did me in. I went into work late cursed myself for not paying attention to the clock. The Friday before that, the first Friday the husband's father was in town, we had a bunch of people over, and we got HAMMERED. I don't remember the last time I got that shitty. All I can say is no one in the house did much of anything the next day. At all. I was toast. I never got sick, but it probably wouldn't have mattered. Damned champagne! I had lots of champagne that night.

Over the course of the last few weeks I made a lot of good meals for big crowds -- burgers and potato salad, pasta and hand-rolled meatballs, chicken parmagiana, tacos -- all kinds of stuff. I was a little cooked out -- so there were a few trips to some fast-food joints sandwiched in there.

Last night, though it was the last thing in the world I wanted to be doing, I baked two desserts for today. Since I wasn't cooking the whole dinner I figured it was the last I could do. I made a pumpkin layer cheesecake and a chocolate chip cookie cake. They look like they came out well, but I've never made either of those things and we have yet to dig into them, so I'll have to reserve my judgment. I'll follow up with a short review.

Oh! The husband also essentially finished our bathroom last night, also. It's all tiled, and the fixtures are in, so we just need to replace the window in there and get a rod and shower curtain and put up the other hardware, and we're in business! I took a bath in the new Whirlpool tub last night. It's awesome! I'll have to have a bath at least once a week. The jets are too much. I need some bubble bath! I'll post pics later.

That's about it for now. I've been big-time slacking on the blog lately, but frankly I feel like shit right now so this was a feat in and of itself. I have to go show my stepmother how to use the electric knife we gave them for Christmas last year, so Ciao for now.
