I think the cat hacked up a hairball and the dog found it. I just pulled it from the dog's mouth, and it was partway down his throat.

That reminds me of my grosser than gross story about the bird-dog. I think she chewed up a string and I did the same thing. Yeah, it's nasty, but your dog knows you care.
